In 2005, thanks to the commitment of the Executive Board members of the Portuguese Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (SPOG), the Portuguese Society of Gynaecology (SPG), the Portuguese Society of Reproductive Medicine (SPMR) and the Portuguese Society of Menopause (SPM), it was possible to amend the statutes of SPOG, transforming it into the "Federation of Societies in the Area of Women and Fetal Health”, and more recently in 2007, into the "Federation of Portuguese Societies of Obstetrics and Gynecology (FSPOG). Meanwhile, the Portuguese Society of Obstetrics and Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SPOMMF) was created and together with the SPG, SPMR and SPM, they form the founding members of FSPOG. The SPOG was abolished in January 2008. The creation of FSPOG resulted from a recognition of the need to maintain a unified approach towards the promotion and protection of women’s health; the need for a higher coordination of activities of the individual societies; the need to address new developments that can overlap the sphere of different societies; and the advantage of an integrated and concerted representation in national and international scientific organisations. |
